Location: 906 3rd Ave, Worthington, Minnesota (open to some but not all work being done remotely)

 

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Represents individuals in immigration matters such as asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, U visas, adjustment of status, and naturalization
  • Hold initial consultations with individuals to understand their immigration situation and provide legal guidance on available options for relief
  • Defend individuals in removal proceedings by liaising with Immigration Court and representing clients during hearings
  • Represent clients in affirmative applications with US Citizenship & Immigration Services
  • Supervise legal assistant(s) and interns
  • Assist with legal education efforts, including planning and providing workshops, producing legal education materials, and conducting outreach to social service and community-based organizations

 

What We Are Looking For:

  • You have your J.D. and admission to a State Bar (Minnesota preferred but not required)
  • You have professional proficiency in Spanish

Legal Assistant

Start Date: Flexible

Hours: Full-time; Monday-Thursday 8am-6pm

Location: 906 3rd Ave, Worthington, MN 56187

The full-time Legal Assistant at Kivu Immigration Law PLLC will be responsible for case preparation, client communications, and community outreach and engagement. Responsibilities include:

Case preparation

Manage legal cases and serve as the client’s point of contact throughout the duration of the client’s case, under supervision of the attorney. Legal Assistant will:

  • Facilitate the singing of representation agreements, releases of informations, etc.
  • Help complete intake questionnaires during initial consultations.
  • Create case entries in Camp Legal.
  • Continually update Camp Legal with new client information, case status updates, and ongoing communication with clients
  • Help collect required documentation, such as police reports and court dispositions.
  • Complete USCIS forms through Camp Legal.
  • Assemble applications, make copies for clients, prepare filings for submission.
  • Serve as an interpreter during USCIS interviews, as needed.
  • Provide language interpretation and translation, as needed.

Client Communications

Provide friendly and professional customer service to clients and prospective clients. Provide helpful and accurate information in an easy-to-understand manner. Legal Assistant will:

  • Schedule client appointments and update Camp Legal.
  • Answer phone calls and respond to voicemails.
  • Relay client’s legal questions to the supervising attorney in a timely manner.
  • Provide case status updates to clients.

Community Outreach and Engagement

Engage in advocacy, community outreach, and education to inform individuals of important immigration laws and policies; help build a positive reputation for Kivu Law. Legal Assistant will:

  • Attend and/or lead in-person events to speak about Kivu Law and relevant immigration laws, processes, and policies
  • Subscribe to and follow relevant email digests to keep up on current immigration news and events
  • Help manage Kivu Law’s social media accounts, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

  • Familiarity with US immigration laws and policies and a willingness to keep abreast of changing laws and policies.

Must have authorization to work in the United States.
