Legal Assistant
Title: Legal Assistant
Start Date: Flexible
Hours: Full-time; 36-38 hours per week, M-Th 8am-6pm
Supervisor: Erin Schutte Wadzinski
Location: 906 3rd Ave, Worthington, MN 56187
The full-time Legal Assistant at Kivu Immigration Law PLLC will be responsible for case preparation, client communications, and community outreach and engagement. Responsibilities include:
Case preparation
Manage legal cases and serve as the client’s point of contact throughout the duration of the client’s case, under supervision of the attorney. Legal Assistant will:
Facilitate the signing of representation agreements, releases of information, etc.; help complete intake questionnaires during initial consultations; create case entries in Camp Legal; continually update Camp Legal with new client information, case status updates, and ongoing communication with clients; help collect required documentation, such as police reports and court dispositions; complete USCIS forms through Camp Legal; assemble applications, make copy for client, preparing filings for submission; serve as interpreter during USCIS interviews, as needed; provide language interpretation and translation, as needed.
Client communications
Provide friendly and professional customer service to clients and prospective clients. Provide helpful and accurate information in an easy-to-understand manner. Legal Assistant will:
Schedule client appointments and update Camp Legal; answer phone calls and respond to voicemails; relay clients’ legal questions to Erin in a timely manner; provide case status updates to clients.
Community outreach and engagement
Engage in advocacy, community outreach, and education to inform individuals of important immigration laws and policies; help build a positive reputation for Kivu Law. Legal Assistant will:
Attend and/or lead in-person events to speak about Kivu Law and relevant immigration laws, processes, and policies; subscribe to and follow relevant email digests to keep up on current immigration news and events; help manage Kivu Law’s social media accounts, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Written and oral proficiency in English and a second language, such as Amharic, Tiginya, Spanish, Karen, Burmese, or Lao; ability to learn and use technology such as Camp Legal, Microsoft Office Suite, and social media platforms to implement office processes and client communications; familiarity with US immigration laws and policies and a willingness to keep abreast of changing laws and policies.
Must have authorization to work in the United States.

Kivu Summer Internship
Title: Kivu Summer Intern (Paid Position)
Duration: May 24, 2021—August 19, 2021 (flexible)

The full-time Summer Intern at Kivu Immigration Law PLLC will be responsible for community outreach and engagement, client communications, case preparation, and legal research. Responsibilities include:
Case preparation & legal research
Manage legal cases and serve as the client’s point of contact, under close supervision of the attorney. Kivu Summer Intern will:
Conduct legal research, often relating to the intersection of immigration law and criminal law or family law; conduct country conditions research for asylum cases; draft motions to submit to Immigration Court for clients in removal proceedings; analyze required documentation, such as police reports, court dispositions, and immigration records; complete US Citizenship & Immigration Services forms and applications; provide language interpretation during meetings, as needed.
Client communications
Provide friendly and professional customer service to clients and prospective clients. Kivu Summer Intern will:
Draft communications to clients and US Citizenship & Immigration Services; relay clients’ legal questions to Erin in a timely manner; provide case status updates to clients.
Community outreach and engagement
Engage in advocacy, community outreach, and education to inform individuals of important immigration laws and policies. Kivu Summer Intern will:
Take part in outreach events at businesses, schools, places of worship, legal aid events, government agencies, community festivals, and elsewhere in Worthington and the surrounding area; help manage Kivu Law’s social media accounts, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn; help create content and design Kivu Law’s monthly immigration newsletter
Job Qualifications and Requirements
Requirements:
Must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate or professional program at an accredited college or university; must pass a background check; must have authorization to work in the United States.
